Attention, Please!
How I Made Friends with My ADHD Brain
Comedian James Mullinger loves to say “yes.” To the gigs, the speeches, the family commitments, anything that comes his way, he says “absolutely, yes.” It’s his greatest strength, and his greatest weakness. After reading his memoir Brit Happens, friends suggested that his misadventures in scheduling could be more than just folly, foolishness, or fun-gone-wrong.
It turns out, they were right. After seeking professional help, James was the only one surprised to learn that he has ADHD. His late-stage diagnosis helped him come to terms with his past foibles — like the time he fell in love with Kate Winslet by correspondence or the disastrous course of events that led him to bomb on stage in what should have been a triumphant return to his hometown. It also helped him understand that his ADHD — the hyper-focus, the multitasking, the retelling of old embarrassments — held the key to his success.
Attention, Please! is a heart-warming, hilarious, and sometimes instructive account of one comedian’s journey to self-acceptance and (at times) a calmer life in a world that wasn’t designed for a million-miles-an-hour brain.
