In a report to the minister of defence to be made public on January 26, 2017, Canadian Armed Forces ombudsman Gary Walbourne outlines the need for cadets to receive the same level and care of compensation available to members of the Canadian Forces — or to civilian employees — who are injured or killed on duty. This report resulted from an inquiry into the 1974 explosion at Valcartier in which six cadets were killed and fifty-four others were injured.

Continuing a tradition of highlighting the best and brightest offerings of Canadian independent presses, the long shortlists for the 2016 ReLit Awards were announced this week. Titles from Goose Lane Editions, Canada’s oldest independent publisher, were named to the long shortlists in all three categories of the award.

The Hill Times, Canada’s politics and government newsweekly, has chosen the best books of 2016. Included on this year's list is Shadow of Doubt: The Trial of Dennis Oland by Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon.
