Editorial Intern

Goose Lane Editions is an independent Canadian publisher with an interest in publishing books of cultural, environmental, and political significance. We believe in books that examine history, challenge the status quo, value the imagination, and envision new directions toward a more equitable future.

The Position

We are looking for an individual with strong visual literacy to join our team as an editorial intern. Working closely with the managing editor and creative director, the editorial intern will focus on the development and production of 5-10 illustrated titles during this year-long internship.

With the guidance of the managing editor, the editorial intern will coordinate editorial work for illustrated titles, ensuring the smooth passage of books through the editorial, design, and production workflow. Specific tasks and responsibilities will include the assessment of submitted textual and visual material prior to editing, the review of edited manuscripts and subsequent preparation for production, the verification of corrections and quality assurance of text and cover files in pre-press, and the review of printer’s proofs. The editorial intern will also contribute to the review and approval of proofs for all of Goose Lane’s titles, provide in-house editing and proofreading of sales and marketing materials (as needed), and develop descriptive copy for books.

Specific responsibilities will include:

Project management

  • Develop and track editorial and production schedules in ClickUp (Goose Lane’s in-house project management software) and communicate with staff and freelancers assigned to specific projects.
  • Coordinate proofreading, verification of proofs, QA review, and the review of printer’s proofs.

Editorial

  • Review and evaluate incoming material (text and image files).
  • Evaluate specific editorial requirements for each title and communicate all such requirements to freelance editors, including editorial requirements associated with the illustrated content.
  • Liaise with the creative director about visual material and design considerations and communicate with the author or project coordinator about image content, captions, naming conventions, standards required for reproduction, acknowledgements, and licencing agreements in order to anticipate any issues that need to be resolved prior to production.
  • Review manuscripts following both substantive and copy edits to ensure that editors have addressed identified issues and, if necessary, communicate with editors about further work that may be required.
  • Prepare copyedited manuscript files for design and page-setting, including the review of both text and visual content. Review page layout proofs, proofread proofs, corrected pre-press proofs, and printer’s proofs.
  • Communicate and maintain high editorial standards and ensure adherence to established processes and house style.
  • Identify, prepare, and deliver pre-print materials to sales and marketing staff.
  • Proofread material in production, when required (i.e. press releases, page proofs, covers, press proofs, promo materials).

Digital Media

  • Prepare image descriptions for illustrated eBooks, as required.
  • Ensure material is ready for eBook conversion as required.
  • Review eBooks for editorial, design, and accessibility elements as needed.

The editorial intern will also be involved in other editorial and administrative tasks at Goose Lane Editions, including contributing to grant applications, attending local events, and performing other tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in arts and humanities, including, but not limited to, English, History, Visual Studies, or a related field; or a certificate or diploma in publishing or editing; or experience in publishing or editing.
  • An appreciation for visual material and an understanding of how text and image complement each other in illustrated books.

Skills and Experience

This position is ideal for a person who excels in hands-on work and has a strong drive to see projects through to completion. It requires an eye for detail, highly developed communication and organizational skills, and an ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects. This work is demanding, and deadlines are always imminent. We expect the person in this position to be an individual who appreciates art; thrives on details; enjoys organization, administration, coordination, and collaboration; is deadline driven; and relishes navigating a lot of moving parts.

The ideal candidate will also have a thorough understanding of editorial procedures and processes, a reverence for the Chicago Manual of Style, and a familiarity with print and eBook production. They should have a firm grasp of project management, MS Office, and Adobe Acrobat. An understanding of French and/or knowledge of InDesign would be assets, but they are not required for the position.

Goose Lane Editions recognizes the importance of the guidance and expertise of Black, Indigenous, and racialized editors; preference will be given to Black, Indigenous, racialized, and minority-language candidates both to increase their representation at Goose Lane Editions and in editorial positions in the publishing industry in Canada.

Compensation and Terms

This is a 12-month internship, dependent upon the results of a funding application. The editorial intern will be expected to work 30 hours per week at Goose Lane’s Fredericton office. Remote work is a possibility, providing the intern can commute to the Fredericton office a couple of days each week.

Salary $28,080 per annum. Goose Lane offers a comprehensive cost-shared health care/insurance package that the intern will become eligible for after six months.

Please forward a cover letter and detailed resumé to editor@gooselane.com.

We welcome applications from qualified candidates until Monday, April 1, 2024.
